I'm one of those folks who really doesn't want to government getting in the habit of telling religions what they can and can't do, so I'm in a way happy Virginia's restrictions of gatherings to 25 of fewer doesn't apply to churches.
That said, churches who are gathering in-person should probably go ahead and consider limiting themselves, especially as COVID levels rise in communities. At the very least this sends a message of care to the communities we aim to serve.
A message that we're on board to join with them to help mitigate the risk, rather than use an exception that might increase that risk. And that's of course the best case scenario of only the optics mattering. Heaven forbid a super spreader event, which is possible.
It would be way better for churches to consider this themselves, so the govt doesn't have to step it. I mean, just because something is permissible, doesn't mean it's beneficial. But that's just my line of thinking on it.
