Thanks to everyone who attended our event last week on pay and progression. For those of you who were unable to make it, we've outlined the key points from the discussion. 1/8
We were given five recommendations: – 1. Do your research. Find out what other people at your level are being paid (glass door is a good example for checking this) 2. Timing - Know when to ask for a pay rise – think about staff budget planning etc. 2/8
3. Be prepared to move organisation for a pay rise, this includes after maternity leave 4. Don’t do anything your organisation doesn’t value unless you have a strong personal interest. 5. Make contacts – network! 3/8
Other points included - When pay is tricky, explore ways to develop yourself such as training opportunities and assess what skills you need to progress in the short-term to achieve your long-term career goals. 4/8
Leadership – Look for those who will champion you at a senior level. Work for organisations who invest in you and will support your progression. 5/8
Don’t fall for the “Good Girl Trap”, learn to say no, being liked should not be your main priority. 6/8
We also heard @Poli_Monitor research that female MPs are much better at communicating online than their male counterparts however they are subject to more online abuse which ends up putting many women off pursuing public facing roles in the future. 7/8
Thank you again to our excellent speakers: Helen Lamprell from @VodafoneUK , @CharlotteHollo, @lucianaberger @MHallward and Sam Cunningham from @Poli_Monitor 8/8
