A story for you. On the Friday after the US election, when the world was holding their breath, waiting for confirmation that the Clementine Clown’s reign of terror would be over soon, my son was at school. He was curious if there were more election results and so
Asked his teacher if he and a couple friends could check online. Now, I don’t know if you can tell by the red and white flag, as some of you seem to struggle with it, but we’re Canadian. My son’s moronic teacher decided to tell him “no, it doesn’t affect us”
I go back and forth between believing that she really is that ignorant and believing that she just wanted them out of her hair. Either way, it’s an incredibly ignorant thing to say. Here you have two pre-teen boys with an interest in their world
They don’t want to go on the computer to watch a Minecraft Stream or mindless TikTok videos. No, they’re interested in current events and politics. She could have used that moment, harnessed their curiosity and talked about the differences between Canadian & American
Government. She could have asked the kids who they supported and then asked them to back it up with a sound argument and facts. She could have discussed the many ways how the American government has a significant impact on life in Canada. Instead, she shut the curiosity down.
When my son told me this, I asked him if he argued with her. He said no and, knowing he can be a little shy, I asked him if that was why. “No, it wasn’t that. I didn’t argue because when we argue with her, she sends us to the principal’s office.” My reply?
“Good! Let her! Then you get to see angry mommy!” And he laughed. This is one of the reasons I loathe blind reverence for teachers. Some of them aren’t heroes. Some of them crush curiosity. I had many teachers like that and it fucking pisses me off that my son has them, too.
You’ll be happy to know that I jumped on the opportunity to educate my child and he now understands the electoral college about as well as I do as well as what concession is, Biden’s transition team, etc. I’m happy for the oodles of YouTubers out there willing to
Cultivate a love of learning in my child better than his teacher does. @MarkRober @over_simplified @cgpgrey @hankgreen @johngreen - he watches these people on his own when left with a device. BY CHOICE. So thanks fellas & thanks internet. Now I have to go talk to his teacher.🤬
