Happy Mondays #academicwitter! We have had an incredible last week, with support from @HackneyAbbott @NadineElEnany @bungatuffie (Paul Gilroy) and @lesback - @UEL_News shooting itself in the foot by firing some of its best lecturers is a sad sad spectacle @profbroderick #SaveUEL
so: several lecturers in question, including @Gargi_at_home @CorinneSquire @jilldanielsfilm , have been fired, I mean made redundant. here is a helpful infographic that may help you. many teach decolonially and are also active in @EastLondonUCU #SaveUEL
some of the lecturers have received emails at 5pm on Friday telling them they were not supposed to teach on Monday. how the students are coping is anyone's guess. now in the middle of covid they also have to worried about their courses being interrupted without warning #saveuel
not to mention the international students who are being told that they will be expelled if they don't pay their fees in the next few days and urgently need support - @UnisNotBorders is on this, but @uelsu has been missing from the picture (please come in!) #SaveUEL
Apparently @uel_news has "literally ripped up the curriculum of every single degree programme in the University and rewrote them so they are specifically directed towards the needs of employers" did you know? I study there and I didn't https://bit.ly/3lEQW24 #SaveUEL
I don't want a job with BP ( @UEL_News partnered w them recently) while other unis ( @Cambridge_Uni @SOAS...) go #fossilfree. I want @NewhamLondon students to have access to education in critical thinking. having a job lined up to feed yourself is important. so is critique #SaveUEL

seriously though, mgmt has to take stock and reverse the course, this is a car crash and has no place in a university that wants to do high level research and has done so before. our reputation is in tatters rn. also imagine unis being able to sack union reps whenever #saveuel

in conclusion: things are not looking good for @UEL_News management and @ProfBroderick & co. should think twice about decisions landing them in hot water publicly and (I am not an expert but suspect) opening them up to future industrial action from @EastLondonUCU #SaveUEL
