Was chatting with a friend yesterday who's taken some lumps.

I agreed with him - he HAD taken some lumps, and it wasn't fair, and it sucked.

And yet ... that's not the end of the story. We all take lumps. Life is cruel.

Covid strikes and destroys $300k of equity in your city home.

The crash of 2008 comes and ruins your career, lays you off, forces you to run up debt.

You get drafted for Vietnam and lose 2 years of your life.

You get drafted for WWII and lose 4 years...and a leg.

Your wife cheats on you, your kid gets cancer, your parents never loved you and treated you like garbage, you got raided by the cops and charged with a felony you didn't commit.

This stuff happens day in and day out, and we get no choice in it.

The pain is real.

I'm not minimizing the pain.

Sometimes the pain and the damage is absolutely unhealable, and the scar lasts forever.

I get that. I'm NOT saying "walk it off, bitch".

I'm sympathetic to the very real, crippling pain life can deliver.

My point is not "it doesn't hurt".

My point is "it does hurt - it hurts like a bitch. But that's already done. The only question before you is what are you going to DO about it?"

When the crap hits you, you don't HAVE to listen to this advice.

You are free to hug your hurt tight, to let it define you, to claim that an honest guy can't get ahead and that They™ are out to get you.

If you do that, you're right.

If you don't do that, you're also right

The universe doesn't care which path you choose. The stars overhead are cold and distant.

The only one who cares which path you choose is ... you.

You've been knocked down.

Do you PREFER to lay on the ground, bleeding, or do you PREFER to stand up and try again?

Choose.
