/ I've been laying the ground work in my research to explore how the anti-vaxxx community will be evolving as there is more and more news about promising vaccines and succesful vaccine trials, and how they will mesh with conspiracy theorists and IMVE actors. (Group A)
/ simultaneously, I have been having this conversation with various friends, colleagues and experts around the release of a vaccine and what concerns they have and if they would take it or be weary of it and wait. (Group B)
/ above and beyond the concern many have about people in Group A when it comes to combatting disinformation and conspiracy theories around a future vaccines; there are various concerns that have been raised by the people I have engaged with in group B who are also hesitant.
/ the people in group B believe in vaccines, believe in science and trust medical experts. Their concern is with the politicization of a COVID19 vaccine, the geopolitical posturing around a vaccine and the companies who seek to profit from being first to release a cure.
/ I have heard friends and colleagues Express's concern about will a.comoany realease a vaccine too early to make sure they profit from it, will a vaccine receive government approval to meet the political advancement of an individual or party?
/ those I have spoken to are frustrated with lockdowns, not seeing their families and friends, not being able to have a normal life as we had; but they are hesitant to rush to return to that as they mistrust in a way those who are part of the process in creating a vaccine.
/ there's some common ground between group A and group B, there is a mistrust in government but for different reasons, there is a mistrust in politiicians, but for different reasons, there is a mistrust in scientific experts and pharmaceutical companies but for different reasons
/ the point of this thread is to make people who work in disinformation, public health l, policy and strategic communications to think now and to war game scenarios of a vaccine release that considers how group A and Be may react differently and the same.
/ if social polerization from both groups can be a public health risk, we need to consider how mutual agreement from both groups about the realease and distribution of a vaccine may severally impact our societies capacity to promote inoculation during this pandemic.
/ not only will the narratives around a vaccine be key from a communications perspective, but also transparency around the testing and approval process will be key. It will also be important to be able to explain this information in a clear way that everyone can understand.
/ since the start of the pandemic both people in group A & B have misused or misunderstood scientific findings and medical reports about COVID which has lead to disinformation and conspiracy theories. Information and trust is king in our current environment and both are lacking
/ In laying the ground works across the globe for the release of a vaccine trust needs to be built with the population. Also nation's need to consider in tracking and combatting disinformation around a vaccine as they would monitor digital spaces during protests or elections.
/ ultimately we need to remember that though there is a reason we need to research and report on group A, we need to not forget that group B is present and that they are also concerned about a vaccine that is released to early for profit or political gaines.
