AFV oddity of the day, the IDF Ro'em (or L-33) self-propelled gun, a combination of surplus Sherman hulls with a new superstructure fitted with a Soltam L33 calbire M-68 155 mm gun. Around 200 were estimated to have been produced, though out of service now. #AFVaDay
Israel had many a strange AFV built on Sherman hulls, including the M50 155mm, using the French Model 50 gun on the longer M4A4 hull
Here the MAR-240 and Episkopi MAR-290 multiple rocket launchers. The former a side firing setup with 36x 240mm rockets, the latter a rearward firing 4x 290mm configuration
Makmat 160mm, again a heavily modded open topped Sherman hull plus a Soltam M-66 160 mm mortar. The front armour folds flat for operation
The Eyal Observation Post Vehicle carrying a 90 foot hydraulic bservation platform
Some examples with engine moved to front of hull to allow medical evactuaion and APC configurations. Note the differing ages of running gear in use, showing wide range of hulls being converted
Kilshon is a Sherman with a AGM-45 Shrike anti radiation missile launcher, intended to engage Syrian/Egyptian SAM radars from the ground. There are many more, Israel seems to have loved modding Shermans.
Why is this relevant in 2020? Its an interesting case study in how far you can continue to use otherwise obsolescent platforms for a wide range of roles. See AMPV, ABSV, If you can still realistically support the automotive side, why not continue to leverage in service fleets?
