Celebrities appropriation of Indigenous culture: a thread
First of all let me explain why culture appropriation of Indigenous culture is so offensive and racist... for many Indigenous peoples (focusing mainly in North America) our culture has been taken away from us and so much knowledge has been lost...
This is because there were many laws that were created to ban the practice of Indigenous culture, and in the 1800’s and 1900’s Indigenous children were sent away to residential schools where they would be abused for speaking their native languages and were made to assimilate...
The last residential school to close in Canada was in 1996, and in 1976 in the US. Many Indigenous peoples are affected by the abuse today, as this trauma lasts for generations.
