Yesterday @eminmilli wrote about the possible restoration of "Caucasian Albanian Church" and @Tom_deWaal commented there that "I'm afraid there is almost no C.A. heritage apart from a few fragments in the St Catherine Monastery, in the language which no can decipher."

This is simply not true. Although I wrote on Facebook earlier (discussion took place on Facebook), I will write here too. Let's start with Emin's question. Azerbaijanis hardly know how churches work, I don't blame them because a very small part of us are Christians.

You can't simply establish a church without getting autocephaly. In order to get autocephaly, you have to be recognized as such by other churches - for example, the Ukrainian church got their autocephaly from the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

We can't have a restored Caucasian Albanian church - because we don't have a functioning Christian seminary in our country. In order to have priests, you have to send people to learn theology abroad.

Caucasian Albanian heritage is deeply connected to Armenian heritage. "History of Albania" is written in Classical Armenian. By preserving Armenian heritage, we can learn Caucasian Albanian heritage too.

Mr. de Waal was wrong too. Sinai palimpsests were decyphered thanks to the efforts of Zaza Alexidze, Jost Gippert, and recently deceased Wolfgang Schulze. They published books on the decipherment of the language: http://www.brepols.net/Pages/ShowProduct.aspx?prod_id=IS-9782503531168-1

This artifact was found in Mingachevir, 1948. After decipherment of the language after Mt. Sinai, they were able to read this inscription too.

Another artifact is the candleholder. According to Gippert, translation is "Yog, the sinful servant of God, have made this appear with the heart as it is decent"

Yet another artifact with Caucasian Albanian inscriptions is a potsherd. Translation - "I, M(a)..., who was pledged ..., with the hope of God .."

Candleholder foot - "Darling, beloved, I made the candle(holder) for you"

This one is a candleholder with defective alphabet - we don't know the meaning yet, seems like just random letters together. Although there could be some religious meaning to it.

Another candholder inscription says - "I made it by hand"

One potsherd just have a name on it which reads - 𐕌𐔰𐕎𐔰𐕚 - Manas, probably a short form of Manasseh.

This article by Wolfgang Schulze http://dx.doi.org/10.13140%2FRG.2.2.18498.17602 is also a must-read if you want to enlighten yourself about Caucasian Albanians. Long story short - yes Caucasian Albanians existed, but we don't know if they are ethnically self-designated themselves as such.

All linguistic evidence suggests that Caucasian Albanian was a Caucasian language, apart from Armenian and Turkish. It was an older form of modern Udi language. It would be much more useful to research the actual heritage of Caucasian Albanians. They deserve it.
