The WRU is now at a crossroads after the change in leadership from two blokes with huge experience in growing commercial businesses to two blokes with none, one of whom's commercial experience stretches only to ordering stock for the stationery cupboard. Slasher Steve from 1/
accounts has shown his comprehension of the role of a CEO in how he's organised the loan from Nat West. He claimed that he had to protect the company so he put the risk on to the part of the game that generates the players that generate the income for the rest of the game 2/
Yes, that's right, instead of taking the liability themselves, the WRU have taken the credit card from the pro clubs and racked up a debt to help themselves. This has happened at the time when the lack of investment under Roger is kicking in as this generation of players 3/
haven't learned from Tiatia, Collins, Rush, Holah, King at that ilk. They've had significantly less stellar imports to learn from whilst having even less time with the Welsh internationals as Team Wales take them from their employers for longer and longer. The obvious 4/
lack of positive osmosis is now hitting home. Furthermore, our competitors in Europe not only have significantly better training facilities but also employ assistant coaches (Lancaster, McBryde, Larkham etc.) that earn more than do the Head Coaches at our pro clubs 5/
Obviously facilities and top staff cost money. So what does the WRU do to ensure its supply chain has access to the best? It lumbers it with a £20m loan. This is Roger-nomics. And who were Roger's closest staff? Patterson and Phillips, the two now running the WRU day to day 6/
This obvious spiral of decline, caused by the WRU Executive never having been fit for purpose and never having had the ability to govern the game properly, is clear to all. And here's the major problem for the WRU: it's obvious to David Buttress. His tweets recently have 7/
been far more candid and note what many of us have noted for 24 years - the game in Wales cannot progress whilst the community clubs hold the power over the professional game. The tail is wagging the dog. The only way to improve - as Buttress has noted - is to split the 8/
pro game from the amateur in terms of governance. The problem for the WRU is that Buttress was brought in by the WRU to head up rugby in Gwent, but Buttress has more business growth experience in his left foot than Rob from Geography and Slasher Steve from accounts 9/
have in their entire minds. So we have a stand off coming - does the WRU back "their man" Buttress and push on with the governance changes started by Gareth Davies, or do they go forward with Rob from Geography giving some extra cash for Aberflyarff RFC to pay for a new 10/
outside half? So that's the cross roads the game is at. The pro game has brought in Amanda Blanc, Andrew Williams, Simon Murderack and James Yandle-Davies. The community game has put up a 70 year old Geography teacher.

Oil and water.
