The music industry CAN’T start back up with all these issues still ongoing. If you want that more. You prioritise money over everything else, including the treatment of Black contributors and women in general who have revealed so much about what’s been going on.
I made editorial decisions in my own Blackout Mixmag work to omit some names from features as to “celebrate” abusers is triggering for the survivors themselves. Once again though US men need to challenge these behaviours in our public and/or private conversations.
I know the measure of the men around me who let me know what’s up I can use that as a gauge that we’re trying to figure out HOW we support women and especially Black women when these things occur. The main conclusion I arrive at is you need to be explicit.
If there’s a position you stand on say it explicitly through your channels etc and let it permeate throughout the different parts of the industry. I don’t know why being against domestic abuse is something you would “hide”?
The saddest part is that writing the features I did over the course of the 5 months. You hear stories and popular names which I’m not at liberty to say based primarily on the womens wishes to remain anonymous. This is always about them remember.
But it brings me once again on to the topic of the industry response. Black Butter albeit incredibly late and will no doubt face lots of cynicism for the time they took to respond to the allegations.
But why @global has not investigated the claims made about @TimWestwood though?

There’s something very sad and it actually makes me angry. You can say very confidently that the extent of the racial bias extends into all aspects of criminality and suspicion.
This is not drawing the race card and for it to be refuted you would have to provide evidence....but

Why can @TimWestwood face no investigations despite YEARS of these allegations circulating the industry space...
Is it because for the most part the women involved are young BLACK girls?

I’ve never seen such a blatant dismissal in all my years in music. I’ve not even had promoters ignore me in this fashion when it comes to being paid.
But the “enablers” are endemic but further to point to prove that beyond a shadow of doubt from an organisation stance...

They as in @global feel it appropriate to WAIT for a criminal investigation. Black Butter and third party sponsors didn’t with Octavian and the sad picture begins to develop that although the abuse may be similar. The race of the abuser AND the survivor affects the action taken.
This is the LAST place you want to see racism. When it comes to getting justice and safety for women. But how or why else would someone act with impunity if they felt that had the supreme backing of their workplace?
Arrogance? Confidence? Confidence in WHAT though?

I can say that as a Black editor of the #BlackoutMixmag I was able to protect my writers from possible claims that we could be perceived to be enabling behaviour as did not challenge it directly. Women of the industry in particular a lot of us men hear and see you

You just need to be able to see us now.
Works the same way. The white friendships I have in the game. They “got it” when they started listening to Black peers more. Men in general we will understand when we start listening to women and Black women also who have effectively been silenced.
As the editor of #BlackoutMixmag and as a Black man....working with @seb_wheeler_ & @patrickch_ I wasn’t just proud of the Black women we amplified. I was also proud of the ones we protected when it came to pulling their stories on THEIR request. Their safety is paramount.
