#Kārtikamāsa #Skandapurāṇa

There was a question on the signifiance of Kārtika Sōmavāra and Shiva, which is quite interesting.

Kārtikamāsa is very special for both Vishnu and Shiva devotees. A small thread with some references below:

Skandapurāṇa Book 2 Vaiṣṇava-khaṇḍa, section 4 has an entire section dedicated to Kārtikamāsa called Kārttikamāsa-māhātmya.

There are historical events, significance of specific days & procedure to be followed detailed in this section.

2/
The exact details could be a good topic to a different thread.

Kārtikamāsa is extremely auspicious for a number of reasons. Mahavishnu wakes up from his Yoga Nidra after the Chaturmasa from Ashada to Kartika.

In this thread, I will focus more of Shiva worship

3/
I would decouple Kārtikamāsa and Sōmavāra vratha, for reason explained little later down.

Sōmavāra vratha is mainly performed to please Sōmēśvara i.e. Shiva who has Sōma (chandra) adorning his matted locks.

4/
In Skandapurāṇa, Book 4 - Kāśī-khaṇḍa, Section 1 - Pūrvārdha, Chapter 14 has description of Sōmaoka.

In this chapter, there is detail on the birth of Sōma / Chandra and his position among the devatas.

Sōma installed a linga, Candrēśvara as below

5/
Sōma performed a deep penance and Rajasuya Yajna. He is given the position of the eye of the lord of the devas.

The chapter has exquisite details on the benefits of worshiping Candrēśvara.

Maheswara pleased by Sōma grants him many boons as below

6/
One of the many paths to lord is to attain the Sōmaloka. One path is by worshiping Candrēśvara as below. However, in Kaliyuga, the greatness of Candrēśvara is not understood by mortals and different path is presecribed.

7/
The other alternate path is to observe the Sōmavāra vrata whereby one can attain the Sōmaloka as below

8/
To summarise, Sōmavāra vrata is mainly to please Maheshwara / Sōmēśvara based on the boons given to Sōma.

Sōmavāra vrata is very common, but is region specific. Some perform this during Phālguṇa māsa , some during Śrāvaṇa māsa.

9/
It appears that Karnataka and Andhra regions perform this vratha during Kārtikamāsa. I couldn't find any specific references in Skandapurāṇa related to any specific month.

If there are other references, I would be blessed to learn.
