Had to be in the emergency room for a family member last weekend. I learnt that
1. we as medical workers need to talk to our pts and families much more. " Hello I am Dr so and so pr I am nurse so and so. " Covid gear makes recognition even harder. The family member is
Already stressed... Why add to the stress by making them guess who is who.
2. We need to talk to pts/ family members through simple things. Do not grab the finger and put on the pulse ox. Rather, tell the pt what u are going to do and let the pt help u. Similarly, the BP
Apparatus, the XR, the arm sling etc etc.
3. Give instructions clearly and ask if pt party understood.
Simple things to do. But sadly lacking. If I, as a physician , felt this, I can't imagine what the layperson goes through. Mind you, no complains about medical care provided.
In fact, lots of appreciation. But there is room for improvement.
