An important article: Only 1/21 swarnajayanti fellowship awardees were women. Could it be a problem of resource availability & allocation problem, or is it just sexism? (1/4) https://science.thewire.in/the-sciences/swarnajayanti-fellowships-gender-discrimination-sexism-resource-constraints-academic-prestige/
While resource allocation is a problem, is the cited solution that it is “merit based” the best solution? Especially because merit based solution suggests that the choice is based on prestige (which just results in elitism!) (2/4)
And the resource availability argument glorifies frugal science and considers it morally superior. At the same time, the “resources are limited” paradigm, while important for the science sector doesn’t apply to others (like defence). (3/4)
Lastly, although mentioned, the crucial point about sexism in science is not elaborated. (4/4)
