So you want to #workinpublishing? Well if you're speficially interested in audiobook publishing here's a thread that may help you on your way! #LoveAudio #Getintopublishing
1. Consume audio. Get your greedy paws on as many audiobooks, podcasts, experimental audio as you can. It's the best way to get an understanding of the market, what's popular, what works, what doesn't and how you can innovate your publishing.
2. Pay attention to narrators, they are the single most important factor of creating an audiobook listeners connect with. Get a sense of what you like, don't like about certain narrators. Consider their range of accents, playing age, genre preferences.
When you're consuming other media make a mental note of actor's voices you enjoy and what genre you'd like to hear them narrate. Build a dream list of voices you'd love to work with. You'll likely be asked about this in your interview.
3. Play around with free audio software to build up basic editing skills. Audicity is free to use and very user friendly, follow online tutorials to learn new techniques. Try making audiograms using headliner. Record your own audio on your phone and just have fun with it.
4. Keep up with audiobook news by creating an alert on your search engine. Follow @thebookseller & @BookBrunch for publishing focused news. Check out #LoveAudio on twitter, follow audio editors who regularly talk about audio on their platforms.
5. Look out for audio focused events with @SYP_LDN, @SYP_Oxford, @SYP_UK, @BookMachine. They're great sources for information of breaking into the publishing at a whole but frequently hold events for those interested in learning more about audio.
Well that should be enough to get you started! Wishes you the best adventures into the wonderful world of audio!
