Evening! This is #AceReporting here to break down Vancouver's climate plan and explain why we basically just need to copy the whole thing. As always, tips are appreciated!

So, if you saw previous tweets from way back, I dropped the six big moves that Vancouver's strategy has to reduce their carbon emissions. They break down as follows:

The Vancouver Comprehensive Plan, which covers Big Move 1 - Walkable, Complete Neighborhoods

2/
The Vancouver Climate Emergency Plan, which is Big Moves 2-5

2: Active Transportation and Transit
3: Zero Emissions Vehicles
4: Zero Emissions Space + Water Heating
5: Low-Carbon Materials + Construction Practices

3/
And lastly, a future report (coming 2021)

6: Restored Coasts and Forests

4/
So before I go into what we can learn from their (amazing) plan, I will make a note of how their carbon emissions differ from ours.

5/
In VanCity, the majority of their pollution comes from natural gas use in buildings: 54% of all their emissions(!!). Next is gas and diesel in vehicles, 39%, and then drops down to waste at 4% and electricity at 2%.

6/
Here in Seattle, our biggest emissions come from vehicles: 62% in total (53% from passenger vehicles), 9% from commercial trucks, followed by buildings which total 35%, and then 3% from waste. (2017 numbers)

7/
I also want to note this because the biggest focused on meeting a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 seems to be on buildings even though cars and trucks make up **TWICE** as much of our emissions. 🌚

8/
Anyway, before I break down the plan a bit more, I want to make note of two things:

1) equity is a major part of this plan. The First Nations of which the land traditionally stewarded by them and occupied by VanCity is made a clear partner in achieving the plan and any changes.
2) The overall plan is extremely comprehensive and uses data to both inform existing conditions as well as targets and action items to meet those targets. Just to roll down the list of appendices in this plan...

10/
Appendix A: Transport Pricing Work Plan

Appendix B-1: 5-Year Walking Plan

Appendix B-2: 5-Year Cycling Network Plan

Appendix B-3: Adding E-Bikes to Vancouver's Public Bike Share System

Appendix B-4: 5-Year Transit Action Plan

11/
Appendix C-1: City-Wide Transportation Demand Management Action Plan

Appendix C-2: School Active Travel Planning Program

Appendix D: Remote and Flexible Work Options

Appendix E: Eliminating Parking Minimums and Introducing More Parking Maximums in New Developments

12/
Appendix F: Residential Parking Permits and Carbon Pollution Surcharge

Appendix G: Expanding the Public Charging Network

Appendix H: Electric Vehicle Charging on Property Action Plan

Appendix I: Charging Infrastructure for Passenger Fleets Work Plan
