Length of these letters is also a signal:
1/2 page - do not hire
1 page - don't know this person well
2 pages - great postdoc down the hall
3-4 pages - my postdoc
>4 pages - do not write a >4 page letter
I agree with the many sentiments expressed here - my length tips pertained to TT faculty search, not graduate school (I do 1-2 pages for those). Also agree that the fact that we can't agree on length and tone does call into question how useful LORs even are.
