When @ryangrim & others make wooing people who chose to vote for racism a priority they make it clear they have no interest in challenging white supremacy. They are fine with most of the status quo for marginalized communities. They just want to protect Whiteness as a construct
Hilariously, it's identity politics until the conversation is about white people upholding white supremacy with their votes. Then white supremacy becomes some uncontrollable force, certainly not created & sustained by the actions of white people. Oh wait...
Every other group of voters gets dragged for not voting in their perceived best interests (remember all the low information voter talk) but now when it looks like white women might have to get informed it's a problem to call out the bigotry? I was born at night, not last night
The real reason that clip hit @ryangrim so hard is that like many, he's uncomfortable with the imagery of white womanhood/white fragility being challenged by women who are not white. I am cast as the Angry Black woman in his mental script because the trope is comfortable for him
White women's access to power used to theoretically hinge on supporting white male supremacy. Early white suffragettes touted that argument to get the right to vote, but it's been 100 years. We can move on in the conversation about power now. Or 60 years ago...
White supremacist rhetoric is a weapon. It's wielded by people & white women have been particularly successful at using it to punish people, build wealth, & then feign innocence even as they watch it destroy their targets precisely because of the same misogynoir on display here
I am going to giggle all week about the ways white supremacy is defended by people who claim to be against it until actual effort is required. I might be laughing over the grave America is digging for itself, but at least my abs will get a workout.
