BLOODY CLIMATE

1. The timing isn't great when people have so much to be concerned about, so it is with trepidation I admit to liking the Build Back Greener policy.

It's modest in its proposals & of public benefit.
2. The old conservation measures such as the stewardship schemes haven't worked well, or at least haven't worked well where I live. The margins around fields aren't wide enough to offer much benefit to wildlife & often get damaged by tractor drivers in too much of a hurry.
3. My county lost much of its hedgerows years ago & we have very little forestry. With little to buffer fields from harsh winds we get soil erosion, so I welcome measures that will help to restore the conservation values offered by more trees to the agricultural regions.
4. I'm a little concerned about the wetland proposals. They didn't work too well in Somerset! Care needs to be taken to ensure a wetland doesn't become a flood hazard to neighbouring farmland/amenity land & homes.

Good ideas badly executed seem to haunt all governments.
5. For those of you who think the Conservative's epiphany to conservation is the work of Carrie Symonds, bending Boris's ear, or whichever other appendage might persuade him, it's worth noting that Boris's father, Stanley, is an avid environmentalist of long standing.
7. And Boris spent much of his childhood on Exmoor at the family farm, so was surrounded by rugged nature in his formative years.

It's worth noting that Mrs T was also quite keen on environmentalism too:
8. I can see why people feel annoyed at the timing. The Govt. attempt to put forward positive proposals at a time when everyone is worried about the economy & health, so conservation feels like something that shouldn't be on the agenda at the moment.
9. I look on it as a positive step away from the CAP & EU policy, forwards to something more tailored that will enhance the country & its unique landscapes. More National Parks, more forestry, more protection for wildlife & habitats.
