If you've blitzed your way through #TheCrown season 4, you'll have seen THAT Australia episode — where Diana and Charles make their way down under for an Antipodean tour of royal proportions. (If you haven't yet, you're in for a treat.)
The episode features some iconic Aussie locations, but not without a little cinematic magic. We'll admit it — the episode was filmed entirely outside of Australia, but it still manages to capture the iconic status of the original tour with reverence.
Malaga, Spain became Sydney (with, of course, VFX of the Opera House), & scenes were also shot inside London's Australia House. The ep also includes Diana & Charles' climb of Uluru in 1983, which is — of course — now closed for climbing to respect the wishes of traditional owners
No climbing or filming took place at Uluru in production — instead, the desert regions around Almeria in Spain were converted through VFX into the landmark area following guidelines provide by Parks Australia.
Traditional owner and Mutitjulu man Reggie Uluru also appears in archival footage used in the episode, and has had his appearance approved by Parks Australia. A donation was also made to a Mutitjulu community charity.
It's a scene — and tour — with pivotal importance in royal history, so the shows creators were keen to show it in a way that was respectful to the local community. #TheCrown season 4 is streaming now.
