So, my first project was developing the pit equipment at SHR. I took over the project from another really good engineer and didn't really know anything about developing impact wrenches. But I constantly was hearing from pit crew and support guys about what everyone else had and why it was so much better than our stuff. The only way to get to the bottom of it was to go to the race track and do some recon work...
So I chose the Bristol night race. Great location, within driving distance, close quarters inside the track...and a great excuse to see an absolute spectacle. I should preface this with the fact that I have shot many motorsports events as a credentialed photographer...
I also own professional photography gear. Anyway, to prepare for the occasion I went to Walmart and got a Dale Sr. T-shirt and a Kyle Busch hat. Wore some dirty jeans so I would fit in. The plan was to go and get what I could as far as pit equipment photos go...
But also get some race pics as I'd never shot NASCAR before. I was a good candidate because outside of our own pit crew guys, the general nascar garage did not know me or know my face.
So I flew the team plane to the track, but once I got there I went into fan mode and meandered around getting photos of various things of interest. About mid way through the race a caution was coming and I was interested in the custom pitgun housing HMS was developing...
So I setup behind the 48 box waiting for them to come in. I was shooting a 70-200 f2.8 from about 20 feet away just on the back side of the yellow line. My goal was getting some clear shots of the pitgun when the changer came back over the wall.
