it's hard to overstate just how bad the COVID surge is in the Midwest. if you're in California, you've probably heard how cases here are spiking -- and they definitely are!

but when graphed with these other states, CA's trend line (purple) looks almost flat by comparison!
this isn't to say that California's increase in cases is not real -- it is very real and should be taken seriously. our case numbers are where they were during our worst ever surge in July, and our hospitalizations are rising too
but here's the difference. California's numbers doubled in the past month or so, from reporting 9 new cases per 100k residents every day to 18 new cases. Illinois' have gone from 15 new cases a day per 100k residents to 95
another wild data point. in CA, the positivity rate is 4.6%, meaning that for every 100 people being tested for COVID, 4 to 5 are testing positive. in South Dakota, it's 56%

CA does more testing, but if SD was doing as much testing as us, their rate would be about 40%
take this with a grain of salt because people often text me about covid bc I’m a health reporter, but today alone I’ve learned of 17 new people (all friends/family members of my friends) who’ve tested positive, and countless more who’ve likely been exposed. this is scary
to reiterate how bad things are in CA, COVID cases increased 47% between Nov. 1 and Nov. 7, the fastest increase California has *ever* seen. that has officials worried that the peak of this surge will higher than ever
these are the California counties where the rate of new cases is rising the fastest. some of the counties haven't seen a whole lot of new cases but they're on here because they're small counties, so each new case counts for a lot
and then these are the ones that have just had the most cases over the past 7 days. on Saturday, LA County recorded 3,780 new cases, the highest one-day total since the peak of the crisis in mid-July https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-11-15/weekend-spike-in-coronavirus-cases-worries-los-angeles-county-officials
