Teeming out. Ppl huddled under any shelter like shadows. Just got Harry his coat (third try!) and new boots in time. Thankful he has shelter tonight. Thx to Kat Catharine Karen and Chris for the coats - they have all gone to ppl who needed them! #toronto
Gave out food gloves coats and boots to 6 ppl today - 4 of them had coughs and red eyes. Told them all to get tested. So worried. Seems really bad at the @Homes_First (THE WORST SHELTER OPERATOR) shelter at Lakeshore. #toronto
Homes First is VERY PROUD of how little they spend on people in their shelters. Front page of their website! Look at those SAVINGS!
Meanwhile day and night, traumatized ppl without enough to eat + anything approximating appropriate clothing for the weather spill out of the shelter. The food is horrific. People are terrified of COVID. Bet the CEO doesn’t know a single one of their faces. But SAVINGS! #topoli
If you’re a charity running homeless shelters and your board chair is a banker and not someone with lived experience of homelessness and your main message is SAVINGS not QUALITY OF LIFE AND DIGNITY maybe you need to take a hard at who you’re really serving. #toronto #topoli
The previous image is a gas station where I have often met shelter residents who are hungry. They spill all over the waterfront during the day, hungry, no medical care whatsoever. Harry can’t even get an inhaler. But savings. What is even important. What matters, @Homes_First?
When I say things like this to ppl they look at me like - they are homeless. Should they not just be grateful to have somewhere to sleep? Not enough. Our society and a properly structured NA tax base can support MILLIONS of poor with dignity AND quality of life. We CHOOSE not to.
