And this is part of the problem: You've been denouncing Trump for 5 years, but now you decide to "listen" to his supporters. And then this "listening" is just giving them a page on which to vent. What's missing all the way around is journalism. 1/ https://twitter.com/sewellchan/status/1327684411836432384
Journalism isn't just providing a page for people to say anything they want--unanalyzed and unchallenged. It isn't enough to say "we talked to both sides." If you really want to understand people you have to be in conversation with them and *question* what they're saying.
To the Christian minister who says Trump defends religious liberty, does this include the liberty of Muslims, Jews and other non-Christians? How do you reconcile defense of unborn lives against the treatment of kids at the border? Not even being snarky here. MAGAs, explain.
Ask the Black investor to talk about how your concern about net worth sets up against Trump's embrace of white supremacy. Ask what that letter writer means by "traditional America." Ask *why* racism might come up first when talking about the pandemic, ed and business.
The "Trump got more votes than Obama and Biden" is an apples and oranges narrative. That shouldn't just sit out there unchallenged. Different elections; different voter turnout. Trump got fewer votes that Biden.
If Michelle Obama says that 72.7 million people voted for a liar, where's her lie? If "God can turn the heart of any politician" point to a "heart turned" during the past four years. Talk about the faith that makes you think another four years would turn his heart? Seriously.
I would sincerely like to hear their arguments, the responses to facts. If @latimes wanted to help the (liberal) majority of readers better understand the MAGA minority, this was a fail. You just printed more platitudes without explanation or analysis. Just unhelpful all around.
I know it's the opinion page, but it's the opinion page of a newspaper. @debofficially @nhannahjones
