I provided the answer:
Start learning the stories of cybersecurity/hacking. The why we do this. Find what parts resonate and research more there.

Books like Cuckoo's Egg and Sandworm are great primers. Cuckoo's egg may be old, but stands up with the "how to investigate incidents" and even more so the "how to document them"

Podcasts
For oral history, Darknet Diaries
For Current Events, Internet Storm + Cyberwire

Learning to code is not bad, but understanding the why we do cyber should happen first. You can do cybersecurity without being able to code, but coding as a skill does not necessarily impart why we do cybersecurity.

Second point on community colleges for basic network/system skills is it will allow you to start building a local network of people that share the same skills desire or career path change desire as you, which will be vital if you do ultimately decide to change careers.
