Sharing - post from a doctor in Hinton AB.
Hi all

As some of you know I am Dr. Martin. I have been here for about 4.5 years, and Hinton is my home. I love this town and its people. It is an honour to work here, amongst the best healthcare team around, and the best townspeople
2/I am sure a lot of you are sick of hearing from me about masking and taking proper precautions. Well, I can tell you that our hospital is definitely feeling the crunch due to the critical care beds in Edmonton being overrun with COVID.

I finished a shift this weekend, and we
3/ had a patient that would have normally been sent to Edmonton immediately, but was delayed due to a backlog, by several hours. In fact we are lucky they didn’t have to wait until monday to be sent out. This patient did not have COVID. The U of A was full in their critical care
4/area this patient needed to go. And this is after their capacity was increase level already due to COVID.

COVID Cases that require hospitalization and the ICU are now officially affecting us here in our town. It is not a given that anyone with a critical illness will be able
5/to go immediately to the city, and this is the first time since I have been here that I have experienced this.

People need to respect mask rules and need to stop having public gatherings. I see many people at Walmart not masking, when Walmart requests that we do.
6/I understand people are concerned about things like the economy. But if things do not turn around, the next lockdown will be much worse than it had to be, and could have been prevented if people hadn’t been complacent.
7/ The economy is best served if people follow the public health advice.

Trust me, I truly cannot wait until we go back to something resembling our old normal, I am more than done with COVID. But we continue to keep our cohorts small, we continue to wear masks everywhere
8/ we go, we continue to strive to keep Hinton safe. Our hospital and clinic staff has been essential to the well being of our town. However our efforts are not enough. We need all of YOU to follow the Public Health guidelines.
9/Wear a mask in all businesses and public areas. Isolate yourself and call 811 if you have symptoms.

Do it for us, your healthcare team. Do it for yourself, do it for your family and friends. Do it for your town. We may very well have people in our town affected because
10/of this pandemic, whether it be from COVID directly, or another issue that couldn’t be treated promptly due to the back log in Edmonton.

Stay safe, everyone!
