Sunday morning FF Philosophy Thread (Session 3):

This is where I spend some time each Sunday AM reading great thinkers to improve my critical thinking skills and become a better analyst.
This week I selected Plato’s Meno. In this dialogue, major philosophical themes are discussed:
-What is virtue?
-Can it be taught or is it innate?
-Difference between knowing and simply believing the correct thing
Plato also introduces the famous Meno’s Paradox:
-We either know something or we don't.
-If we do know it, we don't need to examine it further.
-If we don't know it if we can't learn it because we don't know what we're looking for & won't recognize it if we found it
The takeaways are inconclusive but essentially:
-Can’t define virtue but it’s related to wisdom or knowledge
-Some knowledge is innate or we have prior knowledge of it
-We can be possibly be guided to it but we lack teaches of virtue
Whenever I read about Socrates or Plato’s work, I always go back to rhetoric and truth. Rhetoric is a low art-form. One doesn’t have any REAL knowledge but can dress up their delivery to make it look like the truth. Meno’s paradox is a rhetorical trick.
I see a lot of these tricks in fantasy football analysis. Some of it's easy to spot but some aren’t. Easy identifiers can be:
-an inconsistent process
-manipulating stats & splits
-relying too heavily on one data-point
-failing to back up “takes”
-false assumptions /equivalencies
Common mistakes/tricks continued:
-descriptive stats/metrics and presenting them as predictive
-highlight clips to make points
-misinterpreting/misrepresenting strategies (I've done this several times)
When looking for good fantasy football analysis I look for process-oriented individuals who show their work and explain their thought process. I find it incredibly instructive and I can compare it to my process to make myself better.
Personally, as an analyst, this is what I strive to do. But I’m a long way from where I want to be. I promise to continue to be transparent in my process, share my failures, continue my search for more useful stats/metrics, & improve my delivery. Cheers & good luck today
