#CoupInPeru Last night was brutal. Police unleashed a violence never before seen here, firing rubber bullets at short distance and gas canisters, killing 2 young protestors. At least 41 students are unaccounted for and 112 injured, including journalists. Warning: sensitive videos
A Televisa journalist is shot in the back with rubber bullets. Police would not let any official ambulances or rescues to go in and help the injured. Citizens organized themselves with civilian medical volunteers. This journalist is today in stable condition.
Protests were held all over the country but were specially violently repressed by police in the downtown Lima, the capital. There were mostly peaceful, nevertheless, police was relentlessly inundating them with tear gas. See the canisters flying all over at the end of this video
Pepper gas was thrown from helicopters despite the minister in charge saying publicly they weren't. Police used tactic to lock protestors from all exit in streets and filled them with tear gas.
Many fainted or got injured while trying to flee. Many used their phones to say they were trapped by police and that they were shooting at them. Here, volunteer aids give CPR to a girl in downtown Lima while police still fire gases. **WARNING impactful video**
Here, one of the kids protesting is shot down in downtown Lima. We don't know his condition.
Others were lucky to get out with minor injuries from rubber bullets fired at short distance and to the body.
Others, including by standers, were indiscriminately injured by the police. This man is one of them. We don't know his condition. **WARNING**
A newborn baby whose mom was a passer-by loses consciousness at the end of this video after police inundated the streets with tear gas even were there was people not participating from the protests. "Take her to the car! Give her some vinegar! Put the flag in the car!"
We're in a state of absolute uncertainty. There's no head of state visible, no ministers aiding citizens. Here, the police ignores ombudsmen's officers @Defensoria_Peru repeatedly telling them to STOP FIRING rubber bullets & gases. @WaykaPeru is a trustful independent media
There are at least 41 protestors missing and police DOES NOT WANT TO SAY where they are. Congressman @AlbertoBelaunde- one of the few that voted against ousting pdt. Vizcarra, is DEMANDING police release the list of detainees.
We have justified fears that the police is hiding things. Yesterday police went several times to the HOUSE of a reporter from @elcomercio_peru, Alonso Chero, who was shot in the back to ask him about the object extracted from his back shot by the police while covering the protest
A lawyer from the newspaper had to go to his house to stop the more than 3 visits all day that he received from police trying to force him to surrender the evidence of the shooting that injured him. . @IPYS is Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, Institute for Journalism and Society
Earlier yesterday, a young male who had publicly in social media offered his print shop to print banners for the protest was DETAINED by the POLICE. This is completely illegal, unconstitutional and unprecedented in the last 20 years in #Peru.
There are also reports from NGO 's lawyers and feminists that aided the female detainees, like @alvabren, that police stripped naked at least one of the female protestors for carrying a banner. @JaimeChincha is a news reporter in national radio @RPPNoticias.
Police also ambushed protesters who after learning of 2 of them killed by police sat down in a peaceful vigil to mourn them outside Congress with the police's 'permission' broadcasted live, only to be subsequently attacked and detained as seen in this live video by @noticiAmerica
Police also kept on firing and hurting protestors even as ministers started to resign when the death of two protestors were already confirmed and demands of the police to STOP the violence and shooting. A young guy is shot here for JUST STANDING in downtown Lima.
Another young protestor is aided by civilians in downtonw Lima as police closed up all exits and didn't even allowed the injured to be evacuated. They had to run, hide and run again to get the injured as this kid to the emergency rooms. ***WARNING-EXTREMELY IMPACTFUL VIDEO***
This morning half the cabinet ministers that had resigned last night after the deaths were confirmed, said they are staying. This is the 7th day of protests in #Peru against a congress coup against president Vizcarra who was being investigated for corruption but
Peruvian citizens do not recognize the Congress' coup because more than half of the congressmen are being processed or investigated for corruption and other accusations, even murders, before becoming legislators which gives them immunity.
The new Cabinet too is filled with people with police records or open investigations. Peruvian DO NOT WANT THIS for the country. Also, there are Presidential and congress elections programmed for April 2021 now at risk. This congress is not allowed by recent laws to be reelected.
One last video just in from a source of mine, during last night police attacks, something really eerie that looks like militias: police on motorcycles CHASING and SHOOTING young protestors. Please, Please, Please share and #PRAYFORPERU. This is my country, I am a journalist.
We need the international community to know what's going on right now and NOT SUPPORT this emergent dictatorship. You can also follow my tweets in my Peruvian timeline @claudiacisneros.
One of the most trending hashtags these days is #FueraMerino (Manuel Merino is the current president)
Right now the constitutional way out is an interim government lead by a congressperson who has to be voted as new president of congress BUT the congresspeople who ousted Vizcarra are still trying to elect this person. Protestors already said that they will NOT accept that.
