17th c. Vaniköy Mosque is destroyed by fire… When its patron Vani Efendi was alive, Eminönü (Istanbul’s Jewish quarter) burned. Yeni Valide Sultan Mosque was built on its ashes. He was also present in Sabbatai Sevi’s conversion, and it’s reported that SS & VE carried out ritual mass conversions of the Jews of Eminönü after the fire. Could this valuable heritage tell us more about this interesting period? Does anyone know any studies that mention it?
Beyond its apparent tragic side, it’s also ironic that such a heritage built by Vani Efendi - who supported a project which was aided tremendously by conflagrations - is also burned. More than three hundred years after Vani Efendi, Istanbul is still burning.
