I un-RT'd a post that I RT'd yesterday because I think the person's point could have been made without throwing ND people under the bus and minimizing our struggles. It's very important to recognize that people with different disabilities do not experience ableism the same (1/5)
Way, and to be cognizant of ALL forms of disabilities, but I don't think we accomplish this by drawing a line between physical disabilities and mental illnesses/neurodevelopmental disabilities. I think all that does is feed into the perception that mental illnesses (2/5)
And disabilities aren't "real". Especially when you accuse ND people of "watering down" the term ableism by "tossing it around", as though the ableism we experience isn't real ableism. Why does it matter that my disability is in my brain? Is my brain not a physical part of (3/5)
My body? (I say this for discussion's sake - I also have chronic illness & pain that are often disabling.) Mental illness, neurodevelopmental disorders, intellectual/learning disabilities, etc. are all due to variations in a part of the body, just like any other disability. (4/5)
They are not "disability lite". Yes, we need to learn to recognize disability and ableism in all of their forms, but we should do that by advocating louder for everybody, not suggesting that some disabled people should be quieter about their experiences. (5/5)
Sorry, this has been nagging at me and I couldn't put a finger on why until now. I always want to share the perspectives of people with different disabilities than mine, but this one missed the mark I think.
