I was really impacted by Dr Carolyn Becker's recent piece in JAMA on the ways in which industry inappropriately influences academic medical institutions, and how that may ultimately hurt patient care.

It struck me how little I've come to expect of my colleagues in medicine when it comes to calling out offenses they see in their health systems. 2/
And how often this silence perpetuates the systemic racism and misogyny that drives so many talented individuals from medicine. 3/
I commend Dr Becker for her bravery. Would she have spoken out it if she were early in her career, seeking tenure, rather than semi-retired and well-established? I don't know.

But to use your privilege and voice to call out an ill when you see it is a superpower. 4/
In my own case, we know we carry the burden for many @MountSinaiNYC current and former employees who are terrified to go up against a powerful, multi-billion dollar institute for gender and race discrimination.

But imagine if more of us stood together. 5/
If more of us were willing to speak out about the abuses in medicine, less of us would have to sacrifice so much to seek justice.

Here's hoping we can carry the burden together. For ourselves, yes, but ultimately to make medicine safer and more equitable for our patients.
