Many people around the world love to joke and create caricatures about trans people essentially being drag performers.
#TransAwarenessWeek

Lets talk about what drag is/ isnt:
- Drag is not a gender identity
- Drag is performing exaggerated gender signifiers/roles for entertainment/art
- Drag is highly tied to gay/queer culture.
- There are trans people who happen to do drag, but they’re absolutely separate things.
- Drag is gender play

- Drag is social commentary
- Drag is political activism
- Drag is not just the shit fed to us through RuPaul’s drag race
Drag culture can be a very difficult subject for trans people because many trans folk work really hard not to have their gender expression be seen as a joke.

As a trans woman I have a complicated relationship with drag culture. I feel drag plays a huge role in queer spaces and will always be a special part of it. Seeing drag though activates every part of my own dysphoria and there are many trans folks that feel the same way.
For me my gender expression is not a thing I want to joke about. Trans ppl have historically been seen as a joke, something to be laughed at and mocked. There is space for drag performance but we must also acknowledge/be sensitive towards how many trans ppl dont want...
... to be associated to drag culture or be around drag performances and that needs to be respected. Many trans folk love drag culture but many also do not.
People have many different triggers/types of trauma and dysphoria.
Please dont associate drag culture with being trans.
