Think about this, give it serious thought. What happens when the most powerful armed force in your city has no functional accountability to you the civilian public it is supposed to serve?
No functional accountability through the charter, the mayor defers entirely to a person in the force, the chief of police, the mayor is frightened to not keep himself tied to the chief's leg, cuz thats his Black shield.
No functional accountability through the law, Republicans have written statute after statute to protect abusive power from ever seeing justice, wrote a law to make sure you as civilian could never adjudicate that justice.
No functional accountability through police funding, a majority of the city council cowering as not to be seen as "soft on crime" willing to hand over anything to police, despite what the costs they have wrought for this city. And again using the chief as a Black shield.
No functional accountability through the local press, who breathlessly report every police PR scheme about how we are under threat of doom and only police can save us, without any analysis of the efficacy of a failed police strategy. They are like stenographers, police know this
No functional accountability from a compliant public, who mostly know deep down, they will never be victim of police violence or community violence that keeps their jittery neighbors clamoring for more police. So they just don't care about accountability cuz it doesn't touch them
What happens is u will be touched - probably not the way the panicked would have you believe. Probably won't be the victim of that violent crime that has been flogged for political purposes. But u will be touched by the opportunity costs of investing in a raggedy harmful system.
