For the planets I used this - a 12 inch reflector with DSLR at the prime focus. I had to wait for each planet to come into opposition - to be adjacent to the earth in its own orbit. From beginning to end this took about two and half years. Earth was much more difficult...
#Spaceclub made a probe and launched it on a weather balloon to 35,000 feet. On board a gopro recorded images of the Earth below.
From this vantage point a photomosaic could be created as the probe rotated slowly on its parachute line enabling us to produce an image of Earth from space to include in our entire solar system montage. A World first we believe.

The video that shows the pupil ownership and involvement in the project can be found here. Hundreds of kids bought into it. Literally the best thing I have ever done as a teacher is facilitate my pupils doing this.
