If a Democratic Senator came out and said "My focus is on finding leprechauns, yetis, and woodland elves, and finding compromises with them" it wouldn't be any less detached from reality than a Senator in 2020 talking about working with Republicans rather than without them.
My point is, no matter *what* the Congressional makeup, Republicans are working to create the problems we want solved. We need to play to win as hard if we have an unfavorable position as if we have a favorable one. You cannot work on solutions with people who want the problems.
If Democrats have a Senate minority, the question becomes, "what steps do we have to take to entirely circumvent a Senate that we know, for a *fact*, will work to create the problems that need to be solved?"
If Democrats pull off a 50/50 split, then the question becomes, "what steps do we need to take to negate as entirely as possible the power and influence of a Senate minority that is trying to create the problems that need to be solved?"
If the problem is that Joe Manchin is also trying to create some of the problems that need to be solved, then the question becomes, "how do we negate Joe Manchin so we can solve these problems?"
Every problem is only a challenge. The goal needs to remain the same, which is solving problems we know need to be solved, without ever involving people who only want to create the problems.
That won't break the government. The government's already broken, by people who only want to use government to create problems and block any solutions.

The question needs to be: "SINCE the government has ALREADY been broken, how do we solve these problems anyway?"
Anytime someone talks about working with the GOP instead of circumventing them, I hear somebody who has failed to believe the report of their eyes and ears.

It's not that working together with opponents who also want solutions is bad. It's that there aren't any such opponents.
