1/ Thread:
In all the gossip surrounding events in N10, the most striking (and depressing) thing is how many commentators think stopping the desecration of this, the only planet we inhabit - is ‘wokery’.
Some of them mistakenly believe they are conservative.
God help us.
2/ Was Theodore Roosevelt ‘woke’? He used exec orders to establish 150m acres of protected land said & said: “Here in the US we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals.”
3/ Was Margaret Thatcher woke? “The core of Tory philosophy & the case for protecting the environment are the same. No generation has a freehold on this earth. All we have is a life tenancy –with a full repairing lease. This Govt intends to meet the terms of that lease in full."
4/ It was Thatcher who introduced the Wildlife & Countryside Act, Environmental Protection Act, Montreal Protocol, and was the first global leader to call for urgent action on Climate Change.
5/ Or going back a few more years, it was Anthony Eden who introduced the Clean Air Act; Robert Peel who passed the Mines Act 1842 & the Factory Act; Disraeli who passed the Public Health Act... Nixon who established the EPA
All of them ‘woke’? All simply indulging in trivia?
6/ Or Edmund Burke, ‘the father of modern conservatism’ who said: "Society is a contract... a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, & those who are yet to be born."
Was he engaging in wokery?
7/ On @BorisJohnson 's watch, the government has objectively provided more environmental leadership than any government here – or elsewhere in the world. Long may that continue:
