I've been hearing this lazy, brainless attack on the left all my life and the thing that really, really pisses me off about it is that it is 100% arse about tit as an analysis of political ideology.
The broad left (solid generalisation, you'll find exceptions to everything) do not believe that the US/UK/the West is always in the wrong. What they/we believe - and THIS is really what we are denounced for, & despised for - is that the West is not necessarily in the right.
This is considered a massive crime on the ideological centre & right, where unquestioning flag-shagging is demanded of everyone. Either you're with us, where 'us' is any kind of militaristic & imperialist adventure, however ill-advised or iniquitous, or you're with 'the enemy.'
If you adopt a position on any given international crisis that, say, Dictator X is a terrible murderer but that dropping bombs on his people will do more harm than good, you are portrayed as siding with the dictator & no amount of logic, argument or evidence will shift that.
and the thing that is most pernicious about this line of attack (as so often) is that it projects the terrible politics these people are themselves advocate (I'll support my country, right or wrong) onto their ideological opponents. (I'll oppose my country, right or wrong)
The bottom line is that the closed-minded, ideologically blinkered thinking that has caused untold wars, misery & catastrophe for millennia is NOT a crude oppositionist 'my side is always wrong' but PRECISELY the 'my country right or wrong' the anti-imperialist left reject.
