It’s the easiest and clearest path to actual independence. I haven’t heard a concrete proposal from the crowd that don’t want a referendum. Any other plan I’ve heard falls apart at the first hurdle. https://twitter.com/meljomur/status/1327766141993934849
For one thing - you can’t tactical vote in a referendum. It’s a clear, binary choice. Agreed referendums don’t hinge on whether or not parties boycott etc...
Let’s take the Plan B advocated by Chris McEleny, and Angus MacNeil.

If the SNP wins an election on a manifesto saying a majority of MPs is a mandate to start negotiations, the Tories can just go “Nah we don’t recognise that.”

Then what? It gets us no further forward.
That’s before taking into account the situation where we don’t win an election in that circumstance. Tactical voting has been effective in toppling SNP MPs before - see 2017.

If we go into an election on that manifesto, and don’t win the majority of seats, we’re done.
Yes it’s difficult to persuade the Tories to concede a referendum - but here’s the point:

For independence to be a success, we need the involvement of the UK Government, whether we like it or not.

After all, it’s them we’re attempting to secede from.
An agreed referendum removes the dangers of Party politics, and presents a clear, unambiguous and decisive choice.

It’s the only way we’re going to make this happen.
