Casual & fixed-term contracts are having a detrimental impact on workersโ€™ finances & ability to plan their future.

Almost all spoke about their inability to get a mortgage, reliance on their partner, impact on family and life planning & lack of hope about their future career.
There has been an average of over 11,200 lecturers working on a temporary or casual basis in recent years across Irish universities and ITs, costing an average of over โ‚ฌ67 million each year.

Across Ireland, 440 academic staff in universities & ITs were in continuous employment in excess of two years but not on a CID (contract of indefinite duration), with UCDโ€™s numbers increasing by almost 50% in recent years.

Hourly rates of pay may be high in comparison to other sectors but those who were precariously employed said that this rate drastically reduces when calculated on a per-hour-worked basis. This is due to preparation of lectures, interaction with students, meetings & other factors.
A number of academics and researchers that spoke to us experienced "a lot of pushback" and other issues when they spoke out about the staffing issues as well as insecure work in the sector.
