A brief explanation of the "common travel area"
Firstly, it applies to British and Irish citizens. It is much more than travel. it is social welfare, housing, education, healthcare etc etc https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/800280/CTA-MoU-UK.pdf
But, about the "travel".
UK gives visas to ex colonies, Nigeria,Kenya, India,Pakistan, Bangladesh ( I am not singling any county, it just to explain )
They are visas to the UK NOT Ireland, NOT to EU
It is current that people use those visas, get a plane or boat to Dublin with a view to then go to continental Europe. It happens daily.
The CTA is well policed. UK legally cannot stop a person leaving.
However, officials pick up the phone and advise Dublin. The person is then in breach of law, returned to England and returned to country of origin
People transit from GB to NI and then access the open border to use Irl as access to continental Europe.
Again, UK , NI, Irl officials share info.
There are more illegals ( because they are not refugees ) that use this route than asylum seekers that farage is so concerned about.
The UK pays for repatriation of the people that use UK visas in this way.
The CTA is a very effectively policed border.
It relies on cooperation and sharing of data.
Brexit has made this difficult.
Brexit has made the CTA less than it was.

P.S. buses, cars, trucks are stopped on both sides of the border and people are asked for identification. It is ALWAYS due to prior shared intelligence. It is NOT against the CTA. It is keeping it safe and secure.
PPS. There are no figures.
The CTA is managed quietly. That is a concern for human rights organisations.
However, I can say that 13,000 were sent back from belfast in a 3 year period.
PPPS
This a concern for the british government as the granter of visa is ultimately responsible for costs. It is accepted that ex colonies visas will use NI to gain access to EU by a factor of 10 once UK is ex EU
