South asians are acquiring and dying from COVID at rates higher than the populations around them. The more open and honest we are about it - the more we can work on progress
1/
There are unavoidable circumstances that need to be mitigated
1) mutigen families (both in rich and poor)
2) fiscal instability
3) front facing
A proper focus on medical literacy, fiscal support, language appropriate material, and minimizing workplace risk are key
2/
But we also have to be honest about avoidable risks. Gatherings are occurring socially and with rights of passage. Maintaining community in our social structures it’s difficult, but we need to stop - hospitalization and death is occurring in our most vulnerable
3/
There is an incredible wealth of internal stakeholders and experts to create context specific materials. There is also a need for external stakeholders to partner - the provincial government is upping testing, but there needs to be a recognition of the disincentives to isolate
4
This is also not just a Toronto/peel problem

Surrey - where 30 percent of people identify as south Asian accounts for a significant number of cases in the greater Vancouver area - despite population adjustment
