Under this post is where I will transcribe (hopefully every other day) an in-depth analysis of each Gintama opening
Pray - Tommy heavenly6 (Gintama opening 1)
The first ten seconds are just the Gintama logo, nothing to see here, so I won't speak of this.
Next, the camera pans to gin's eyes, and introducing his face first to let the viewers know that yes, this is the main character. He is riding his scooter with a nervous Shinpachi, and as the show has just begun he isn't comfortable enough with being on Gin's scooter.
This specific scene also shows that he doesn't know how to live life yet, as he is a young teenager out in the world, contrasting with Kagura in the next scene, who has gone through a lot more than Shinpachi and is generally more mature, symbolized by her riding sadaharu unfased
Gin and Shinpachi then jump off of a high place, possibly signifying the expression "Let's jump into this" when referring to beginning Gintama, and into the world that would soon ensue from their meeting.
Kagura and Sadaharu in quick succession also jump off of that high place. Here, Sadaharu symbolizes most of Kagura's troubles and the jumping off part is symbolic of her enjoying her life on earth with Yorozuya
Next shots the Yorozuya gang going about their daily lives, showing the viewer that this is more of a slice of life/comedy anime rather than a serious battle-oriented shounen. Although one thing to note is that it shows takaya (Takachin) long before his first appearance
We then cut to Gintoki standing alone in a desolate battlefield. Most likely this is not to spoil any other characters and there; isn't really anything to note outside of how it shows that he was a former Joui rebel
The next shot also ties in and foreshadows Gintoki's regret of his past choices that had led him to become a Joui rebel
He then proceeds to look upward, signifying that he is looking towards the future, and/or signifies that he is looking to Shoyo which at this point he believes to be resting in heaven
Skeletons then rise up from the ground and Gin proceeds to fight them. This heavily foreshadows the future conflicts of the series which focus on Gin facing off against people from the past such as Takasugi and later on his former teacher
After this scene, it pans back over to Gintoki lying down on a hill. This signifies that instead of looking and focusing on the past he's more interested in his future with Kagura, Shinpachi and the rest of the people in his life, as further detailed with them around him.
^ adding to this point
Next showcases the Shinsengumi at sunset. In endings they are often showed in this way, as well as in a broken city. This could signify that although they are the arm of the law, at the end of the day (cue the sunset) they are still rebellious (as with the broken town)
Next is Sachan and her nasty-ass Natto. I find it pretty funny but it's nothing of notice.
Next up is Elizabeth and Katsura. We can see Katsura looking back which notes to the viewer that he still looks to the past and thus is the reasoning why he is still a Joui rebel. Elizabeth pops out behind him which signifies that he shows up after Katsura.
After it pans to a shot of Gintoki looking over Edo, which is symbolic of his promise to protect the world that his teacher had left behind as well as the Terminal which appears in almost all of the openings.
And then comes the final scene of the opening which consists of Gin's head being bit by sadaharu. The fact that he doesn't appear hesitant is perhaps due to the fact he had suffered many scars before and again foreshadows his past as a Joui rebel.
