Veblen’s concepts of business, industry, and sabotage are generalizable. Ownership places a structural constraint on organization. Things have to be organized such that they can be legally partitioned and quantified. The same issue exists with, e.g., cities and the environment.
You’re never going to have ‘green capitalism’ because the damage is already done when you organize human activity to apportion resources among owners. It’s not even that’s organized solely for human exploitation; our use of the environment is organized for absentee ownership.
You can have green industry. When a factory dumps waste into a river, that’s not an engineering decision. Ecology is expressed in a language engineers understand. Ecological data is collected by tools they build. Alternative models of production will require new technology.
