This is something which my Guru told me when I asked him why Sri Ramachandra asked Mata Sita to undergo trial by fire.

with wrong intention. Ma Lakshmi as Sita was found as a baby by King Janaka in field. After marriage to Sri Ramachandra & during vanavas comes the abduction sequence.
The Lakshman Rekha is a camouflage when Sita Ma is replaced by Budevi's daughter so that Ravana can abduct her

There are other upa kathas which tell us about how Ravana was cursed by a priestess when he tries to violate her. The same priestess was born as Budevi's daughter.
Ravana touching her again led to his downfall. Mighty Ravana did not abduct Sita Ma but this priestess.

During the entire abduction period Sita Ma was safe with Budevi.
Sri Ramachandra being a Godhead knew this the moment he saw Sita after killing Ravana. He wanted Mata Sita back. So he advised trial by fire wherein Budevi's daughter goes back & real Sita comes back to Sri Rama

For a commoner it looks as if Sri Rama was wrong but in the celestial scheme of things it was the right thing to do.
