As #COVID19 skyrockets around US & we struggle to manage it while trying to convince others that the threat is real, I’ve been thinking about The Declaration of Independence

This is was spurred by the wonderful San Francisco ep of Somebody Feed @PhilRosenthal

Specifically this phrase, one that for time immemorial has made America unique:

Life, Liberty, & the pursuit of Happiness.

So important, each feature is a proper noun. That was intentional.

The D of I also states the government’s responsibility is to ensure these for all
2/
It’s been a turbulent ride with many horrendous failures & remarkable successes since 1776.

Regardless, remains something for us all to aspire to & hold leaders accountable.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness

#COVID19 directly threatens all of these.

In the past, when an entity threatens these core principles, America rises to the occasion.

We are under direct threat & the response is clear.

We have been divided thru errors of omission & commission.

In response, your healthcare professionals have shouted themselves hoarse

Honestly, I feel our message has been circulated. People are choosing whether or not to listen & follow.

It’s not working.

We can create a new message that pulls different levers.
5/
We all want Life, Liberty & the pursuit of Happiness. Our nation has a tradition of hard work, sacrifice & collaboration to counter threats to what the D of I lays forth.

I’m a doctor. I’m an American. I want all of us to have access to these “unalienable rights”
6/
Without shared effort, sacrifice, support & respect, #COVID19 will only further threaten them.

Our choice is clear

The Better Angels of our nature are still strong

Life, Liberty & the pursuit of Happiness are on the far bank. The bridge is masks, space, vaccines, & respect
7/
Let’s cross that bridge together.
