I'm spending a few hours reading scripts people have sent me the past few weeks. It's exhausting so I gotta throw out some tough love to anyone wanting to become a TV writer: When writing your script, please remember to include a story.
Story = Character wants something and acts to get it.
Story ≠ confused character asks wacky friends & family what they should do with their life.
Your own inner confusion about what to do with your life is probably not as cinematically captivating as you think it is.
You know how to tell a story: "Once upon a time..." "Guy walks into a bar..." "There was knock on the door..."
If you were sitting at a bar and someone said one of those lines, you'd listen. But if they said, "I've got this friend who just doesn't do anything and doesn't know what they want to do...," you'd pay the tab and split.
Writing is hard but it's straight-up storytelling. Just tell a story.
