⚡️I'm starting a new side project!⚡️

Going to try 'building in public' & will share wins/fails on this thread.

Thanks @gaby_goldberg, @rrhoover, @shl, @Shpigford, @APompliano & @Austen for inspiring me from afar to build in public.

Follow along for the good, bad & ugly! 👇👇👇
THE IDEA

"Modern day Tiger 21."

Tiger 21 is a community of uber wealthy people that help each other grow & preserve wealth.

Membership = $30k/yr.

My goal is to build a private community of investors to do the same (i.e. grow & preserve our wealth) but w/o the $30k price tag.
PROBLEM TO SOLVE

Investing in alternative assets like Venture Capital, Real Estate, Private Equity, & Art/Cards/Collectibles is CHALLENGING!

These assets are difficult to discover, diligence & access.

It is hard to do this work alone. With a community this work is much easier.
BACKGROUND

After I sold my small ecom biz I realized I needed to diversify beyond index funds.

Sounds easy but in practice it was hard!

Investing in good VC/RE/PE funds felt reserved for those 'in the know'.

Via community I hope to enable everyday people invest in alt assets.
SHOW VS TELL

In the community I'll share the funds & assets I invested in & why. imo showing your work & sharing your thinking is a very powerful way of learning.

Collective sharing allows us all to become smarter & build stronger financial futures for ourselves & our families.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

Verbatims: Members saying things like "I invested in my 1st RE fund" or "I built a financial plan using a community template" = 🔥

Accessibility: Cost (free for now), content (minimal 'finance speak') & open to all.

Size/Engagement: >1k engaged members.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE PART II

Education is key!

In time I hope to convince some of the brightest minds to guest speak. Think @Keith_Wasserman & @moseskagan on evaluating real estate GPs.

The goal is a win-win. The community learns & GPs build relationships w/ potential LPs.
So that's the set up.

I've listened to enough @gregisenberg to know building community is HARD!

I'm an investing nerd & love to jam out on ideas w/ other entrepreneurs, investors, & builders so I'm really creating something to scratch my own itch.

Onto the process of building:
STEP 1: PICKING A DOMAIN

Asset classes like VC, RE & PE are known as 'alternative investments' or 'alts'.

Bought http://altinvestmentclub.com  for $13 (I'm too cheap to buy a premium domain!).

Between 'investment' & 'investor' I used Google Trends & chose 'investment' for domain.
FINDING A DEV

I posted a job on @Upwork to request a build of landing page & forums.

Lots of 'meh' applicants but ended up finding Muhammad who has 20 years experience building forums.

Did a 30 min call to vet him and was impressed... you're hired!

Cost = $1,500
PICKING SOFTWARE TO POWER THE SITE

Finding a software solution proved surprising difficult.

After an hour or two of Googling I landed on XenForo.

My developer had a compelling case on why Invision is better so we ended up going that route.

Cost = $300
LANDING PAGE

Dev asked what I liked. Told him I LOVE the look of @theSamParr's http://Trends.co

Dev seemingly took 'inspiration' to mean 'exact copy' so we're reworking it.

P.S. Sam & @ShaanVP feel free to share your love/hate around 'Modernized Tiger 21' idea on MFM :)
HOME PAGE VIDEO

Building a short video in @canva for the landing page. Goal is the concisely explain club & hopefully entice people to apply.

I debated being in the video myself but I cut my own hair yesterday & it's pretty bad.

So for now just making something simple w/o me.
I will add to this thread as I get further down the path & go live.

Time/money recap: So far I'm into my weekend project for ~$1.8k & ~8 hours.

If you love/hate the idea or have ideas/feedback I'd love to hear from you! ✌️

P.S. Building in public kinda scary tbh.
