Having recently come off of directing a couple of film/TV production in B.C. during our covid times, I thought I’d share a couple of observations...
A script supervisor I worked with who had already done a few shows told me she found they were doing as many setups as they used to, but less takes. I did more rolling resets than I normally do, though that also wasn’t always only for covid reasons. Apologies, assistant editors.
Art and costumes departments are having a more challenging time these days because the supply chains are more limited. These departments are often called upon to source things quickly in time for a shooting day and are more beholden than ever to shipping times and availability.
I liked working paperless. Scriptation was really solid, especially being able to transfer notes from draft to draft with the touch of a button. I bought a waterproof iPad case with a strap I could wear across my body and that was definitely better than leaving a binder around.
Remote editing is tricky… Videoconferencing platforms are not built to stream perfectly, even with strong internet service. Granular edits are particularly hard to review in the moment. There’s more reliance on waiting to watch the day’s output to make sure things are working.
Ace editor @simonesmithedit recommends free NDI Tools for editing over Zoom. @davidmoriya_ mentioned http://Frame.io , which I used/liked for watching/noting outputs. http://Wipster.io  is similar. I may simply need a speedier graphics card for perfect Zoom streams.
Not pleased with the typos/errors that made it into this thread. Anyway, I can't say enough about everyone I worked with in B.C., the first time I’ve spent significant time there. They took the protocols seriously & were so considerate of me & each other. And they're so talented!
