“Vary your angles, worm’s eye, bird’s eye, etc.” This is a piece of advice I’ve heard given to aspiring comics artists since I was taking my portfolio around to cons as a teenager. It’s not good advice, at least not on its own.
Of course you want to vary the angles you choose but the important thing is to put the “camera” in the right place to see exactly what needs to be communicated in the panel.
The angle you choose is saying just as much to the reader as any word balloon. You’re choosing the angle because of what it says. With intention. That’s the starting point.
Just saying “vary your angles” is giving the advice the wrong way around.
This was inspired by hearing that same piece of misguided advice given on a podcast recently.
