Want to know why Georgia even has these runoffs in the first place? It's because of a throwback law from the Jim Crow era in which White Power Brokers did not want a situation where multiple white candidates divided up the vote and gave a Black candidate a chance to win with 34%. https://twitter.com/ReverendWarnock/status/1324172659576442881
This entire system has been built on racist policies that disenfranchise Black people. Any statewide election in GA in which a candidate did not receive 50.1% of the vote automatically went into a runoff *because* white ppl were scared of a Black candidate getting the plurality.
This policy was put in place to *ensure* that only white candidates would be able to win statewide races. in 1968, the first Black senator elected in Georgia was expelled from office along with the other 'Original 33'. GA has not seen a Black senator since that injust event.
If we're being honest, this goes way beyond GA—only 8 Black people have ever successfully been elected as state senators post-Jim Crow, and only ONE represented a southern state (Tim Scott, R-SC). No democrats to this day. Raphael Warnock is attempting to make history in Georgia.
Today, white supremacists march through the streets of DC at the behest of the president. From December 14-January 5th, Georgia voters will decide whether to keep the status quo, or to send a Warnock, a Black man and Ossoff, a Jewish man to the senate. https://twitter.com/upekkha18/status/1325099259176349701?s=20
